This single check does more work for you than any other on the list — it eliminates the largest share of low-quality products in one glance. The fruiting body is the mushroom itself — the cap and stem you would recognize as a mushroom. Mycelium is the root-like network of the fungus, and in supplement manufacturing it is almost always grown on sterilized grain (rice, oats, sorghum) that cannot be separated from the mycelium before processing.

The result is “mycelium on grain” (MOG): the entire substrate is dried, ground, and encapsulated. What to look for: a beta-glucan percentage stated as a number (quality fruiting body extracts commonly test in the 20–50%+ range), ideally alongside a low alpha-glucan/starch figure that proves the absence of grain filler. If a brand won’t put a beta-glucan number on the label or the COA, that silence is itself the answer — so let the number lead you, because a brand that prints one is telling you it has something worth measuring.

Step 4: Check the Extraction Method

Even genuine fruiting body needs to be extracted to be useful. Mushroom cell walls are made of chitin — the same tough material as insect shells — and humans digest it poorly. Raw, unextracted mushroom powder locks much of its beta-glucan content behind that chitin barrier.

  • Hot water extraction — the most common and best-studied method; breaks down chitin and releases water-soluble beta-glucans. This mirrors the traditional teas and decoctions mushrooms have been used in for centuries.
  • Dual extraction (hot water + alcohol) — adds the fat-soluble compounds water misses, such as the triterpenes in reishi. Especially worthwhile for reishi and other triterpene-bearing species.
  • Raw powder — dried and ground with no extraction. It retains nutrition and some bioactives, but bioavailability is limited by the chitin barrier.

What to look for: an explicitly stated extraction method. “Hot water extracted” or “dual extract” is a green flag; a label that mentions no extraction at all usually means raw powder.

Step 5: Demand Third-Party Testing and a Readable COA

Everything above is a marketing claim until an independent lab confirms it. A certificate of analysis (COA) is that confirmation — a third-party test document reporting what is actually in the product: beta-glucan and alpha-glucan content, species identity, and screens for heavy metals and contaminants.

What to look for: a current, product-specific COA from an independent lab — not a generic “quality tested” badge, and not a certificate for a different product or a raw ingredient the brand happened to buy. Step 6: Verify the Dose and Extract Ratio

A perfect ingredient at a token dose still does nothing. Two numbers matter here.

Serving size and active content. Look at how much extract is in a serving and, where disclosed, how many milligrams of beta-glucan that represents — then compare it to the doses used in the research for that species. A “proprietary blend” that hides individual dosages makes this impossible to evaluate — it is a red flag rather than a feature — so a label that simply prints the milligrams per species has already told you something good about the brand.

Extract ratios. Labels like 8:1 or 10:1 mean that much raw mushroom was concentrated into one part extract.
