February 11, 2019

UPDATED, October 4, 2020:

Ganoderma lucidum, known as reishi in Japanese and lingzhi in Chinese, is a polypore mushroom found growing at the base of hardwood trees, particularly maple. It’s often kidney-shaped with a beautiful glossy rusty-brown color.

A Brief Reishi History

Reishi mushrooms (lingzhi) have been recognized and documented as a medicinal mushroom for over 2,000 years. As a symbol of success, divine power, well-being and longevity, lingzhi mushrooms are regarded at the herb of spiritual potency and essence of immortality.

It's rare to see reishi mushrooms in the wild, and before it was cultivated, only the wealthy could afford it. Although it does indeed poses many medicinal qualities and benefits, perhaps its reputation as "the mushroom of immortality" was perpetuated because of its rarity and use by high society.

Health Benefits Of Reishi Mushroom

The list of health benefits of reishi mushrooms is extensive and amazing. Reishi gets its health promoting power from various compounds including polysaccharides, dietary fibers, oligosaccharides, triterpenoids and vitamins and minerals, among others.

Reishi Mushroom Uses And Dosages

Despite the purported benefits listed above, one of the main uses for lingzhi or reishi mushroom is boosting immune function.

A study published in 2005 found the immunomodulating effects of reishi mushroom polysaccharides to be extensive, promoting cellular immunity.

Several factors come into play when it comes to dosing reishi mushroom, such as the person's age, health and body weight.

In the United States, reishi mushroom is most often found in the form of dry, powdered extracts encapsulated or in tea blends. Tea seems to be one of the most popular ways to take reishi mushroom.

The bottom line: We believe more evidence-based clinical trials need to be completed when it comes to effective dosing.

Conclusion

Understanding some of the history of reishi mushrooms can help us understand and better use this immune-supporting supplement. And with the recent research that has been conducted, we can see that the reishi mushrooms, in fact, have beneficial properties today. However, we understand more research has to be conducted, and we will continue to stay here, anticipating those results.
